Isabella's *Long* Birth Story

On Tuesday, July 20th, I had a busy day ahead of me, and I knew it would probably be the day something significant was going to happen. I made sure Jess would be at my appointments that day, and I made sure I had a decent meal before the appts. Just the day before, I had an NST and failed, so I was scheduled for another the very next day, on the 20th, just before my 39 week OB appt. My NST appt was at 3p, and I failed that NST as well - baby girl wasn't cooperating and my BP was up. The nurses contacted the Perinatologist to get her advice, and I told the nurses that I had an OB appt just minutes away. They contacted the Peri, but they decided to let me take my NST results to my OB appt so my OB could interpret and decide what we wanted to do. My OB appt was at 3:50p, and I did the usual - PIAC, BP, weight check. My urine still had trace protein, my BP was up, and my weight hasn't been anything significant. The OB looks at all of these stats and decides it's time to get her out, and I agree. The OB checks how far along I was - 39 weeks exactly, with no progress. So I ask her, what are we gonna do? She sends me to L & D to be induced. I will have the chance to VBAC. So, at this point, I knew it was going to happen. Something in my gut had always told me it was going to be around the 20th or 21st. I don't know why, but I knew. Mother's intuition? Anyway, when we finished up the appt, I looked over at Jess, and poor thing looked so nervous. I think, like everyone else, he was nervous to see me in pain and the work that was to come.

But just before we headed to L & D. We went home to get our bags, spread the word, and kiss Jacob good-bye for a few days. Let me tell you, I had such a hard time saying good-bye to him that day. I would burst out crying. So many feelings were going through me - joy, fear, guilt, happiness. But I'm glad I took my time to get to L & D 'cause when we got there my room wasn't ready. They'd said they were busy, and my room was being cleaned. After waiting a few minutes, we were called back. I got into my stylish hospital wear, and got ready for the journey that was about to begin.

The plan was to get my cervix ready with a gel, and there would be 3 attempts. Each attempt required that I lay for about an hour and then I could get up, and if I needed the next attempt, it would be 6 hours after the beginning of the last attempt. Well, I used all three attempts. And it was now July 21st, I didn't sleep a wink the night before, and I was exhausted already - mentally and physically. It was early morning when they told me it would be around 12p when they would start the Pitocin to induce. But with the last gel attempt, I had already started contracting on my own without the Pit. And I had just sent Jess home to shower, eat, and say Hi to Jacob. We told him he had to be back in an hour, just in case. Before the IVs, I was allowed to take one last shower, and get ready for the big ride. They hooked me up to IV to get my antibiotics for my +GBS, the Pit, and magnesium sulfate for the high BP (worst crap ever!). OMG, I had the worst nurse for this. I mean, she was sweet and really nice, but she did NOT know how to get the IV in me. She tried 3 times! And the 3rd time I literally cried out, it hurt so much. And she kept shoving. Finally, she had another nurse try, and she looked at the needle they were using and it was HUGE! She said she was trying with the wrong size needle! I swear I nearly fainted when I saw the size of the needle. No wonder it hurt so much. But luckily, the other nurse was able to get it in one shot w/ the right size needle. During this time, they also hooked me up to internal monitors to watch my contractions and baby's HR.

Now we wait. We wait for the pit to kick in, and it did. Actually, I was starting to have regular contractions on my own for a few hours now. I watched as my contractions went from little bumps and hills to these massive peaks of pain on the monitor. The nurse checked me and I was at 2cm dilated. The contractions were still regular and getting more and more painful, but I could still talk. Finally, I couldn't talk through them and the OB said I could get an Epidural. By the time the Epi came, my contractions were strooong. I was in sooo much pain. And I would barely get a minute to breath before another started. I wanted the Epi so bad, but it kept taking forever. They prepped me for the Epi and I could feel it, but it was taking awhile to get in my system. The Epi guy said it would take 4 -5 contractions, but it took more than that, I was still feeling them. Not as bad, but I shouldn't have felt them. So they doped my up some more, and at this time I was laying on my right side. Slowly, I felt my right side get numb, they then placed me on my left side and I could feel the numbness spread to my left side. But I could still feel the pain that was radiating from my middle. They gave me more meds. Finally, I wasn't feeling them anymore. I was okay, but baby girl was not. Her heart rate wasn't looking normal. It was really low. They decided it's time for a c-section. But...before they take me, they check me and I'm now at 5cm! This was all happening very fast, in just minutes I dilated pretty quickly. There was hope that I could still VBAC. But then baby girl didn't look good again, and they decided not to risk it. I still really wanted my VBAC, but I saw the distress that baby gril was in, and I knew I had to have the RCS. But I can now say I know what labor feels like, and it was everything I thought it was going to be. It was time for my second c-section.

I was rushed to the OR. I knew what would happen within the next few minutes, however this time I would be awake for the entire thing. I thought I wouldn't because I was sooo drugged up, but I did. I remember being nauseous from all the meds. But I was awake. I remember I was just waiting for the cry...and I heard it and I was okay. I was able to really relax, and I was in and out of sleep for like minutes at a time. And I just listened to everyone's conversations around me, and trying to hear Isabella. They finally brought her to me, and she had sooo much HAIR! And she was tiny! I swear the scale was off. They said she weighed 8 lbs 2 oz but she looked so small. Jacob was huge in comparison. They took her back to do the rest of her stuff, and her APGAR, at first was 7/10, understandable because of what had happened before birth, but a few minutes later it was 9/10.

After all was said and done, they took us all to a recovery room to monitor us. Isabella had to be watched for her blood sugar because of the gestational diabetes, but it was good after having a bottle. Her BS were normal and remained normal from there on out. I was able to watch the nurse bathe her and get her ready while my meds slowly wore off, and Jess went to the waiting area to tell everyone about Isabella. A few hours later, we were taken back to an L & D room where we could be watched more closely instead of the usual L & D recovery rooms. It was already getting late by this point, around 7p, and we all got as comfy as we could. Luckily, we had double beds so Jess was able to sleep in an actual bed the 1st night, and I was quite comfortable and was able to sleep.

We were kept in the hospital for 3 more days, released on Saturday. My stay was actually really good. They offered a nursery at night, but I didn't use it. Jess is such a good dad. He took care of her throughout our stay while my body recuperated. Isabella has been doing perfectly. She is perfect. Serious, can you say SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT?! She can go for like 4 -5 hour sleep stretches at night! Yeah, I know, it's probably a fluke and it won't last or anything but the extra sleep helps. And Jacob is such a good boy! He has not shown one ounce of jealousy or one mean streak...yet. He says baby when he sees her, and he tries to say Isabella, but only Bella comes out. I'm seriously the luckiest woman alive! My kids (<---Ha! I said kids) are angels, my husband is sooo helpful and such a good dad, and my family is so supportive. What more could I ask for? As for me, the c-section recovery hasn't been too bad. Everyone said that recovery would be harder because I had labored and my body would be tired. Honestly, I felt much more tired and in pain when I had my c-sect with Jacob. I've not felt any pain from the surgery, just soreness, and if I over do it, the soreness gets worse. But nothing my meds can't handle. Ah, and one souvenir I seem to have from my pregnancy is high BP. Yep, I didn't have it before I got pregnant, but now it doesn't seem to want to go away. They say it will, eventually. I hope. Oh, and I have more swelling in my feet than I did when I was PG, apparently from the IV meds.

We've now had a mother and baby wellness check up, and we're doing fine. Isabella's weight has gone down but nothing to worry about, and my recovery is moving along fine. I actually feel really good. I actually feel like going out! I can't believe it's already been over a week, but momma and baby are happy!

Please pray for us, and the safe & healthy delivery of baby girl!

DIY Hair Bow Holder

I've been debating on making one of these, but when MRS KBJ over at Spice It Up explained how simple it was to make, I just had to do it! And I'm so glad I did. It was the best 49¢ I've ever spent. Seriously, it was cheap, and so easy! I went to Michael's and I found a wooden ladybug mask that was the perfect size. I had my niece paint it with acrylic paint. I covered up the eye holes with construction paper, I ripped off the mask handle, glued ribbon onto the bottom, and voilà! A hair bow holder. Check out Etsy and some of these are selling for over $20! Yeah, right. I spent 49¢, people!

His 1st Boo Boo! And 38 Week Update

We almost went two years without a big cut, but one day shy of 23 months, Jacob had a fall. He skinned his right knee. I wasn't there, but Jacob was with my niece at her house when, I was told, Jacob tripped on the uneven concrete and grass area of the yard. They were on their way back to our house, and when he got here he wasn't crying until I put on the Neosporin and the band-aid. He would have these random outbursts of crying, then stopping, then looking down at the band-aid, then crying. And he kept saying, coco (term we use for an ouch). It was funny at first, but after 45 minutes of it...I couldn't handle it. Well that, and everyone was spoiling him. Not helping, people. So after a bit, he was okay, just a few random moans here and there, and the comfort of his Mimis (aka his pacifier). Oh, and he was walking with a limp while holding his short leg up so it wouldn't touch the cut. It was too adorable. Ugh, what's going to happen when he breaks a bone or something?!

And as for baby girl, I'm just a few days over 38 weeks and, so far, things have been good with her. Well at least this week. Monday I had an NST and there was a dip in HR but nothing too concerning. Baby girl was probably so active she smooshed her cord. I also had a growth U/S this week and baby girl is weighing in at 7.5 lbs! If I go to my due date that means she'll be like 8-8.5 lbs! Come on labor! You need to start! But I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon. I had an OB appt this week too and I'm still the same with no progress. I also received some wonderful info about my hospital stay from last week. Apparently my OB was upset that I wasn't fed right away, and that they were trying to C-section me! I knew something was up. Ah, I'm over it now. Just moving forward and praying/hoping for some *labor dust* Anyone got some?! Send it my way, please!

Hers & His Bedroom

Yeah, my due date's exactly 2 weeks away and my intuition of her coming early may be right on, so I knew I had to get their room together. Well, I didn't have to, but I knew I wouldn't give it enough attention if I waited 'til after her arrival. It's pretty much done. As you can tell, her theme is ladybug and Jacob's is bumble bee. The sets are very similar and I like that they mesh well in the room. Of course, I found a similar set a few weeks ago that I loved that had pink, green, and black in it with ladybugs, but oh well. This is definitely not the nursery I had envisioned for her, but I made do with what I had. Some of the changes I made, despite the obvious, is new curtains, moved the rocker out, new toy basket, redone ladybug hamper, and one of the shelves was redone. The curtains now match both sets with the black and white gingham. And I had two bee shelves so I took one and redid it (with my niece's help) to match with ladybugs. I also bought a sage green hamper with natural wood that I redid. I painted it white and glued ladybugs to the front, and now it matches perfectly. Honestly, I lagged on this room. It didn't take long at all, but I was dragging my feet. I'm so relieved it's done!

L & D Twice in 1 Week

Since my last post, things have been a bit crazy. Friday I had an NST and, at first, baby girl looked fine. She was moving like crazy, and my BP was ok. Nothing outrageous. But then baby girl, I think, went to sleep or stopped moving as much as before. Well, then the nurses tried stimulating her with the buzzer thingy, and she didn't really do anything. So then I had an AFI because the perinatologist, that saw my last NST, wanted it repeated. MY AFI was fine, it was at 13. However, since baby girl was not so responsive to the buzzer, they decided to do a Biophysical Profile (BPP), this measures baby's heart rate, muscle tone, movement, breathing, and the amount of amniotic fluid around baby. Well since baby wasn't moving much now, they couldn't measure movement or muscle tone, so she basically failed. Now I'm starting to get worried.

After 2 hours at the NST appt, and talking with my OB and a peri, the nurses send me to L & D. Yeah, that's twice in only a matter of days. I was being sent to continue the NST, and to have a CST (contraction stress test). By this point I'm hungry and they don't want to feed me just in case I have to have a c-section. But there I was, repeating that I don't want one unless it's an emergency. So they continue to monitor us, and my BP is through the roof! Like 150s/100s. That's bad. But get this, while I was at the NST it was 100s/60s. It was the nurse who was making me mad. I was not happy with her and it was showing, but then my husband got there and he told me to relax, I started watching TV, and slowly my BP went down. It hovered around 130s/70s the whole time. Not too bad at all. It's already getting late by this point, my NST appt was at 2:30p and it was now 5:30p. They're still monitoring baby, and they start the CST, this is where they give me a small dose of contraction inducing meds and check to see how baby reacts when I have a contraction. Baby girl passed this test. Yay!

We go on monitoring and it's super duper late and they tell me I'm staying over night, but the good news is I get to eat. Finally, at 10:00p, I had dinner. Oh, and I've had a new nurse for a couple of hours already that I LOVE. She explained everything and answered ALL of questions. She was there for me throughout the night with whatever I needed. I tried to get some sleep, but I was extremely uncomfortable. I had the IV in my right hand for the nutrients and the CST meds, and my right arm had the BP cuff that went off every hour. I did not sleep at all. Oh, and I was sooo hot! I was sweating bullets despite being half naked, so my favorite nurse offered me a fan! It helped a ton. I even woke up, well brightened up, at around 4:00a and I was starving. The nurse brought me a snack. Perfect. I also asked her how baby was doing and she said ever since I ate dinner, night before, baby girl had looked perfect. She said that if I had come in to do an NST, and baby girl did that, she would have let me go within 30 minutes. Great. After that, I tried to sleep some more, and I was so relieved she looked better, but by the time 6:00a came around I was up. I asked the nurse how baby did through the whole night and she said she looked great. She also mentioned that she would contact my OB to get me out early and continue my third 24-hour urine catch at home. But then there was a shift switch and my nurse was gone, and the OTHER one was back, but my fave nurse had explained to her about contacting the OB and everything else. So, by 9:30a I was allowed to go home, but on strict bed rest now. I can only go from couch to bed to bathroom. It's going to be hard but I only have 2 weeks left, if that. I have a feeling I may be induced soon, but please, no c-sect!

The whole experience was deja vu...again. I know how baby acts and reacts. I know her routine/schedule. I eat, she moves, for like 1 hour, then sleeps, I eat, she moves, then sleeps. It's the same thing that happened the other times I was admitted to L & D. But no one wanted to feed me despite me telling them what would happened. Definitely not happy with that, but this journey is coming to an end, and just as long as we're healthy it doesn't matter how we get there.

Again, that was a book! And if you read that...Thank you! If not, I totally understand.

Doing his weird arm/cheese thing...

37 Weeks & Full Term

Oh my. What a week it's been. I've been sharing it with a cough and cold. Yup, I'm sick. Again. For the third time this pregnancy. Seriously, I'm O.V.E.R. it. If that weren't bad enough let me tell you about my appointments. So I had my Endo appointment and it was at 10:40a and I'm in the waiting area doing my thing, emailing, texting, reading a magazine, and I realize it's 12p. Uh, yeah it's noon, and I have an OB appt at 12:40p. I walk up to the ladies at the desk and ask how much longer 'cause I have another appt in 30 minutes. They apologize profusely...no one outright said it, but I'm guessing they forgot about me...again. It has happened before. So they rush me back and do my vitals, and my BP is high! Like higher than it's ever been. I see the Endo Doc he says my sugars are perfect and that I'm done with seeing him. Yes, I'm done with him! Well, for the next 3 months. But yay, no more long waits at his office or being forgotten about. I just have to keep up what I'm doing up until the day I deliver. Woo hoo!

Okay, so off I run to my OB appt, and I do my thing there and my BP is higher than it was before, like super duper high, and they found protein in my urine...again. My OB immediately sends me to L & D, but before I go she tells me that I am 1 cm dilated and baby is still high. And now I'm off to L & D where they will monitor my BP and baby. I get there and they hook me up to the baby monitor and the BP machine. They take my first BP and it's around 120/70...yeah, that's normal. I think it's a fluke. So I'm already pooped and starving by this time, and I ask the nurses for food and tell them that I'm diabetic. I get my food within minutes. I eat, I'm resting, I'm feeling better. I had my BP taken at least 4 more times and they were ALL normal readings. My readings hung out at around 120/70 the ENTIRE time. No sign of high BP anywhere! WTH!!! Baby girl was perfect too. I had just eaten so she was all crazy, as usual. However, they did get my labs back and my OB thinks I have an infection. Which is very deja vu since the last time I was sick, with a cold, they said the Same. Exact. Thing. Dehydration and a cold. Boo. And now here I am, on complete bed rest. Yeah, tell that to someone who has a toddler. Ain't going to be complete, but I'm going to try. Oh yeah, and I'm ready to get her out. I'm so uncomfortable, it hurts. And being sick makes it hurt even more, when I cough, try to sleep, move. I'm just relieved things are still looking great for baby girl. I'm so so happy about that! I pray to God it stays that way!

And if you read all that...Thank you! I'm glad I have a place to vent!

Just because I love him sooo much...

July 4th Recap

I hope everyone had a fun and firework filled 4th! We did! The weekend, despite it being a long one, went by super fast. Friday Jacob and I had a park play date, but man was it hot. Saturday I had an early NST, and baby girl looked fine. My amniotic fluid was back up at a good level. Saturday night Jes, Jacob, and I went to watch a UFC fight at a cousin's. Didn't watch it, but had some fun girl talk. Sunday, the 4th, was very low key. We did nothing. I did nothing. Well, actually, we did see a local firework show. Jacob loves fireworks! Future pyro, maybe? He danced and clapped to the music they were playing at the show, and every time he saw a good firework he would clap even more. **I have video** Momma got to enjoy her usual funnel cake while Dad chugged down some Jamba Juice. Him and my niece. At the end of the show they were selling them for $1, you know they took some to go. Finally, Monday I had another NST and baby girl was wild! She had been moving pretty much all morning, and most of the afternoon. My appointment was at 3p and she was just all over the place. We were all just watching my stomach move. Baby girl looked good, however there were some dips in her heart rate, but the nurse thinks that because she was moving so much, those dips could have been her baseline. We had an AFI to check my fluid again and it was still the same as the day before. The nurse said a Peri would get back to me if we needed to repeat the NST again. Let's hope not. And this week is filled with appointments once again. I'll see my OB for my weekly, and my Endo to check on my GD. I think I may be put on meal time insulin. Ugh, I hope not, but I've been lax since we're coming down to the end. And finally, an NST at the end of the week. Busy, Busy week.

Fun at the park...
